My Heart

Maïla Léger, C.C.F., 7th grade

My Heart

My heart is not like a barber’s chair

You sit on and then leave

For someone else to take his turn.

My heart is not a chalkboard either

To write on and then erase,

So someone else can write on it too.

Rather, my heart

Is a cemetery

That’s grounded in you for ever.

No one can remove or replace you;

I am your Bawon1 .

Kè m

Kè m pa tankou yon chèz kay kwafè

Pou annik parèt apre sa ou leve

Pou lòt la fè pa l tou

Ni nonplis kè m pa tankou yon tablo

Pou ekri sou li aprè sa ou bay lòt la efase l pou l ekri tou

Men kè m

Se tankou yon simityè

Ou la ou la nèt

E yo paka leve w

Paske mwen se Bawon w

1 in Haitian vaudou, Bawon is a loa (a divinity), master of the dead and guardian of cemeteries.
