Abandoned

Seth Allen / Woodford County

Imbower'd vaults of pillar'd palm,

On either side a wall,

A throng of fur swinging so free

Beneath the canopy,

That I can hardly make my way

Before I lose my gait.

The scorching sun obscured by leaf

Gives not my mind relief

From past, from dark, the dullened pain,

The never-ending stain

The memory of that old thief--

The time that was too brief.

Beside the brilliant sea she lay.

To her I cannot repay

The debts I owe--the life she gave,

The life she made for me--

That red brick town by ocean’s foam,

The place I once called home.

The sad old town beside the sea

A beauty left to be,

Alone, disturbed by none but me

With no one left to see

Her tears, the waves, her loneliness,

Forever left like this.
